Maria Papadimitriou is a jewellery designer and illustrator based in London. After studying Fine Art she was powerfully drawn to the wonderful shapes and colours of the numerous packaging elements we constantly throw away after two seconds of using them and so set up Plastic Seconds, a jewellery line which shows that being considerate to the planet can be both fun and funny. She does, however, hope that one day there will be no such throwaway packaging leftovers for her to make jewellery from… Apart from dreaming of ways in which she could salvage all the soy sauce little fish containers from sushi packages used every day by hundreds of people, Maria is also an illustrator who has contributed doodles under the name of Slowly The Eggs to Amelia’s Magazine and various other projects. She has illustrated the words of Shibin Vasudevan and Lucy Siegle for ?!X’s The Futures Project.
?!X: What’s the Future You Choose?
MP: The future that I choose is one when everyone will truly know from experience that everything and everyone that seem ‘out there’ is ourselves and so will be unable to hurt it either purposefully or by neglect.
?!X: What’s a ‘think’ to create this future?
?!X: What’s an ‘act’ to create the future you choose
MP: Meditate.
?!X: What’s a ‘vote’ to create the future you choose?
MP: My vote goes to a book…I think everyone should read Shunryu Suzuki‘s “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind“. It really helps with creative, imaginative, non-rigid and compassionate thinking which is so essential at the moment.
?!X: Future Soundtrack – What song would you take with you into the future?
MP: A hugely poignant little song by the marvellous Ivor Cutler……..

?!X: Can you share with us up to 5 weblinks that you find interesting and inspiring?
MP: There is so many interesting and inspiring projects and weblinks it is a little impossible to choose, so here is the first 5 that quickly came into my head upon reading the question:
www.stitchproject.com– a newborn organisation that is using art to engage people with environmental issues.
www.feeding5k.org – because the facts listed on this page are utterly shocking.
www.kidsco.org.uk – amazing work done by a charity whose founder, Camila Batmanghelidjh, is one of the very few people who seem to me to blossom and become love itself just by truly allowing themselves to express their true nature – in which case it delightfully involves a fantastically individual sense of style!
britishguidetoshowingoff.com– relating to what I said about the link immediately above, this film is for me a celebration of playfulness – a quality most crucial in creative problem solving – and of total acceptance of each others natures.
www.ameliasmagazine.com – a magazine who’s editor, Amelia Gregory, is a tireless, inspiring woman, who again combines perfectly fun, creativity and coolness with activism and who ceaselessly supports and encourages young creatives.
