“What is required is not more creation, but extremely precise clinical destruction. We need the old world to die and we need to kill it…We have had 50 years of hippy good vibe activism and it hasn’t solved a single problem.” ~ Vinay Gupta

About this interview:

What will it take to bring world-changing technologies to the mainstream?

In this episode Amisha sits down with technologist, policy analyst, futurist and global resilience expert Vinay Gupta. Vinay’s life’s work is to ensure the long-term survival of humanity by finding solutions to our biggest problems. Together he and Amisha speak about some of the most complex and urgent challenges humanity faces today, as well as the elegant technological and systemic solutions that are already within our grasp.

Vinay shares his thoughts on the transformative possibilities of blockchain beyond the broken dream of decentralisation, the ‘folk religions’ of Western progressives, how they block progress on the our greatest challenges and proposes solutions for the three terrible technologies causing global warming.

He explains why we must always look beneath the official narrative of an issue to find the deeper cause, stop pretending that structural problems are about personal choices and focus on changing the law rather than the drawn-out work of changing consciousness.

We hear about how global warming will break agriculture as we know it yet a few cells from a cow could produce a river of hamburgers to save us, why it’s possible that racism and gender bias are built into our DNA and why kindness and compassion may not be the answer to all of our problems.

“When people get overwhelmed they either go in or go out. If people go in they develop capacity to better understand themselves and the world, if they go out you get an entirely tougher and more forceful variety of activist. So step out of the idea that problems need to be dumbed down and deal with the idea that solutions require a huge diversity of responses and are not solvable only by niceness.” Vinay Gupta

Vinay Gupta is CEO of Mattereum.com. He was a futurist for many years, with a strong interest in existential risk,  the technological transformation of society and commerce.Vinay is a leading figure in the blockchain space, having co-ordinated the release of the blockchain platform Ethereum in July 2015 TechCrunch recently named Mattereum as perhaps the world’s weirdest and most daring startup.
