“It’s an assumption from the people who taught me, that creation lodges a tiny piece of its genius inside each of us. You have to find it, and then grow it, and then share it…I will go on this journey and never give up until I have located it, grown it and I’m then fully sharing it.” ~ Mac Macartney

About this interview:
How can we be in service to the world at this time?
In this episode, Amisha spends a morning with the speaker, writer, and change-maker Mac Macartney. Mac is the founder of Devon land-based learning centre Embercombe and is the author of several books.
Mac speaks about living courageously and on purpose, connecting with our deepest love, our gifts, and our responsibilities to walk the Twin Trail of inner and outer development and contribution. He introduces three core questions at the heart of his work around leadership and purpose, as well as the profound symbology of The Children’s Fire. He shares the story of finding and stewarding the land at Embercombe, starting with a vision in his early 20s, going via extensive training with Native American teachers, and culminating in a tremendous gift.
Together Mac and Amisha discuss the incremental degradation of our natural world, the true meaning of leadership in our times, and the role of the peace chiefs. They share stories of the power in small, day-to-day interactions and the impact of how we are with each other, as well as what we do in the world. They speak about the complexity and challenge of living and working in a community, the humble reality of being a human work in progress, and how to stay committed to the journey when the weather gets rough.
“It’s like a ship sailing on the sea. You arrange your sail according to the winds and the current at that time, but then the wind shifts. So we are always having to reorientate and rearrange. If you apply yourself you become more intelligent and skillful in doing that.” ~ Mac Macartney
Mac is an international speaker, writer and change-maker. Mentored by indigenous people over many years, he has acquired profound and original insights into questions preoccupying many contemporary leaders. Mac seeks to inspire the emergence of the leader in each of us, the leader who will take courageous action for a better world. Championing A New Story of Sustainability lies at the heart of this.
Mac’s purpose is to touch hearts, fire imagination and invite courageous action to better serve our world. All his work is aligned to this mission. Mac writes about his search for meaning and purpose in a culture that is captivated by values and beliefs that assault the Earth’s life-systems and collapse society in upon itself.
As an inspirational speaker, Mac intertwines themes rarely associated with each other – the quest for meaning and purpose, organisational leadership, nature, identity and the role of ordinary people in shaping a future fit for generations to come.
