“It was the assumption of the indigenous people that taught me every time one of us is born, creation lodges a tiny piece of her genius inside our gut and says, now you’re going to have to find it. You’re going to have to grow it. And then you must share it.”

About this interview:

In this week’s Timeless, we speak with Mac Macartney who brings us into a fresh understanding of leadership – one that is relational and begins with listening across differences. True leadership, as he conveys, is the quiet confidence that comes from following what matters most, not from needing to be followed. It is not something to postpone until we are fully formed; it is the art of showing up – imperfect and evolving.

Through his stories, we are invited to lead with courage and care – to recognize our innate gifts, take responsibility for what we love, and stand for what is sacred and worth protecting. The conversation touches on how rarely we ask these questions of our young, even though discovering what is truly sacred may be the most vital education of all. In an age marked by polarization and uncertainty, leadership rooted in integrity, curiosity, and compassion becomes essential for the healing and flourishing of our communities.

Mac speaks with humility and grounded presence, drawing on a rich tapestry of experience — from founding the rewilding project Embercombe, to mentoring business leaders, to learning directly from Indigenous elders who shaped his understanding of service and responsibility.

We invite you to slow down, listen deeply, and receive the simple, profound codes of leadership this Elder so beautifully shares.

Mac Macartney is an international speaker, writer and change-maker with over thirty years’ experience in people and organisation development. Mentored by indigenous people over many years, he has acquired profound and original insights into questions preoccupying many contemporary leaders. Mac intertwines themes rarely associated with each other – the quest for meaning and purpose, organisational leadership, nature, identity and the role of ordinary people in shaping a future fit for generations to come. Mac is the founder of Embercombe and co-leads three of their core programmes, whose mission is to inspire, and empower people to live in close relationship with nature and co-create a regenerative, flourishing future for all species. He is the author of The Children’s Fire and Finding Earth, Finding Soul.
